Baseball Walks Off Xavier 6-5 on Senior Day

Omaha, Neb. -- Creighton Baseball celebrated senior day in one of the best ways possible as former Musketeer Teddy Deters reached on an error to walk off Xavier in the ninth inning for a 6-5 win on Saturday, May 10.
With the win the Bluejays moved to 34-13 overall and 14-3 in BIG EAST contests, while Xavier fell to 29-23 on the season and 13-7 in conference play.
Xavier took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, getting a one out double from Nolan Tucker, an infield single from Carter Hendrickson anda. sac fly by Clay Burdette.
The Musketeers pushed its lead to 2-0 with a three-base error to start the fourth, followed by an RBI single from Isaac Wachsmann.
The Bluejays answered with a run in the bottom of the fourth with singles from senior Matt Scherrman, senior Dakota Duffalo and an RBI single from senior Will MacLean.
A pair of walks and another RBI single for Wachsmann put Xavier back up by two at 3-1. Creighton quickly responded with two runs in , the bottom of the fifth. The inning began with singles senior Nolan Sailors and junior Ben North, followed by a one-out RBI single from senior Matt Scherrman and an RBI fielder's choice from Duffalo.
Creighton took the lead in the sixth as Sailors raced in from third base on a wild pitch to give the Bluejays a 4-3 edge.
Xavier pulled even in the seventh with an RBI ground out from Wachsmann, but Creighton surged back in front with an RBI single from sophomore Connor Capece to make it 5-4.
The Musketeers knotted the game at 5-5 on another RBI ground out by Wachsmann setting the stage for the bottom of the ninth.
With two down in the bottom of the ninth, Nick Venteicher worked a walk after falling behind 1-2. Junior Tate Gillen laced a single through the left side, then Deters reached on a fielding error at first, allowing Venteicher to race home from second base.
Creighton closer Garrett Langrell earned the win (6-1), holding Xavier to one run on three hits over three innings. Xavier closer Luke Hoskins took the loss (3-4), allowing an unearned run on two hits in 1.1 innings.
The Bluejays and Musketeers complete their series on Sunday, May 11 with a 12:00 pm start.
