Community Invited to Shape Future of Historic 4th Street Firehouse

Grand Island, Neb. — The 4th Street Firehouse Project is calling on residents, business owners and community stakeholders to take part in a public visioning meeting on Monday, June 23.
It will be held from 5-7 p.m. at the Grand Island Public Library and will offer attendees a hands-on opportunity to help shape the future of one of downtown Grand Island’s most iconic buildings. Located in the heart of the 4th Street Business Improvement District (BID), the historic firehouse has long stood as a symbol of civic pride and architectural heritage.
Now, as community partners work to reimagine the space, public input is more vital than ever to ensure the redevelopment reflects the needs, dreams, and culture of the neighborhood. The visioning session will be hosted in collaboration with South Dakota State University’s School of Design, Kansas State University and the Technical Assistance to Brownfields (TAB) program. These organizations are providing professional expertise and planning support to help transform the firehouse into a vibrant, community-focused asset.
Participants in the meeting will engage in interactive discussions, share their ideas, and explore potential concepts for how the firehouse could be repurposed—from fitness studios and maker spaces to collaborative community hubs and more. All members of the public are encouraged to attend and participate.
