Creighton Women Snag Road Win At Drake, 83-74
Des Moines, Iowa -- A trio of Bluejays delivered impactful performances as Creighton Women's Basketball defeated Drake 83-74 on Sunday, November 9. The win even both squads record at 1-1 on the season.
The trio of Grace Bofelli, Neleigh Gessert and Kiani Lockett controlled portions of the Bluejay win. Creigthon got off to a fast start thanks in large part to Boffelli. The native of Eldridge, Iowa scored the Bluejays first seven points, surrounding a three-pointer with a pair of back-down layups to help Creighton take a 9-3 lead in the first 92 seconds.
Holding a 9-7 edge with just over five minutes remaining in the opening frame, Neleigh Gessert took over as the freshman scored 17 first half points. She connected of 5-of-8 from beyond the arc in 12 first half minutes. The tandem of Gessert and Bofelli delivered 28 of Creighton's 44 points in the opening 20 minutes as the Bluejays led 44-33.
Lockett took over in the second half as the senior torched Drake for 19 of her career-high 25 points, including 10 in the final frame alone.
The win, however, was far from easy. Leading by as much as 14 points at 55-41 with 5:42 left in the third, but Drake raced back with nine straight in just over three minutes. Sophomore Allison Heathcock and senior Kennedy Townsend connected on critical treys down the stretch of the third to give the Bluejays a 65-56 edge as the game moved to the fourth quarter.
Another charge from the Bulldogs brought the game back within five at 69-64 (5:27), but Lockett scored eight of Creighton's final 14 points to put win in the bag.
Lockett's 25 led the Bluejays, while Neleigh Gessert closed the game with 17 points and Boffeli delivered a double-double with 11 points and 11 rebounds in just her second game as a Bluejay.
Creighton returns to action on Wednesday, November 12 as the Bluejays face Nebraska in Lincoln on a game televised on FS1 at 8:00 pm.
