Damage Assessments Underway, Resources Being Made Available

Grand Island, Neb. — City crews, emergency personnel and partner agencies are actively assessing damage across Grand Island following the historic storm and flash flooding that impacted the area on June 25.
While many areas saw extensive water accumulation and damage, the majority of standing water has now receded, allowing safe access for clean-up, repairs and evaluation.
“This was a storm of record-breaking magnitude,” said Mayor Roger Steele. “But Grand Island has always met adversity with resilience, and we’re already seeing the community respond with strength, generosity and care for neighbors.”
To assist those impacted, several important resources and safety guidelines are available:
Clean-Up Kits
The American Red Cross has clean-up kits available for those in need.
* Pick-up location: 404 E 3rd St, Grand Island, NE 68801
* Phone: 1-800-RED-CROS
Residents wishing to donate clean-up kits may also deliver them to the Red Cross at that address.
If you find mold in your home, follow safe clean-up practices. Mold remediation tips are available from the EPA at: epa.gov/mold/mold-cleanup-your-home<https://www.epa.gov/mold/mold-cleanup-your-home>.
Debris and Garbage Removal
Residents and businesses are responsible for removing debris from their properties.
* Use your regular garbage hauler for pickup.
* Items that don’t fit in regular containers should be taken to the Grand Island Transfer Station, which is located at 5050 W Old Potash Hwy, Grand Island, NE 68803. You can also call the station at (308) 385-5433.
Basement Flooding Precautions
If your basement flooded, do not pump water down a drain, as it enters the sanitary sewer system.
* Instead, pump water outside toward the curb or gutter.
* Draining into the sewer system can cause backups and worsen the situation inside your home.
Private Drinking Water Wells
If your home relies on a private well and it was impacted by floodwaters, have your water tested before drinking.
* Testing is available through the Central District Health Department.
