Fall Restrictive/Open Burn Canceled

Grand Island Fire Department

Grand Island, Neb. — Due to persistent dry conditions throughout the area, the Grand Island Fire Department is canceling the fall open burn period scheduled for October 13 – October 26.

The decision is not only due to the dry conditions, but also the lack of substantial precipitation forecasted in the coming weeks. If local conditions improve, and it is deemed safe to allow restrictive/open burn, the fire department will send out another announcement indicating the reinstatement of restrictive/open burn.

The department recognizes this may be an inconvenience to some community members, but reminds residents the Transfer Station accepts grass, leaves and tree branches year-round at no charge to Grand Island residents within City limits. The entrance to the Yard Waste Site is located on Monitor Road, which borders the Transfer Station property to the east.

Restrictions
Yard waste to be disposed of must be clean of waste and debris and must be emptied from garbage bags at the time of disposal. Customers delivering yard waste must ensure that loads are properly secured to prevent littering along the roadways. Free disposal of yard waste is only for homeowners and renters, not contractors for hire.
