GI Home Federal Finishes Runner Up At Creighton Prep/CWS Tournament

(Omaha, NE) - The Grand Island Home Federal baseball team went 1-1 on Sunday at the Creighton Prep/CWS tournament, finishing runner-up. Grand Island played eight games in five days, going back to Wednesday. The tournament featured 30 teams from several different states. Grand Island also defeated Kearney Tuesday night in GI 7-1 before taking off for Omaha.
On Sunday, GI would defeat Wayzata, MN in the semi-finals by a final score of 9-7. GI would get 9 runs on 11 hits, and have three errors in the contest. Wayzata would get 7 runs on 13 hits, and have 5 errors. Three Grand Island players would get two hits apiece: Arends, Cushing, and Ruiz. RBI's would come from Arends, Verplank, Cushing, and Laureiro.
In the championship game, GI would fall to Brooklawn, NJ, 5-2. Brooklawn is a four-time national champion American Legion baseball program. Brooklawn got a 6-4 win against Dickinson, ND in the other semi-final to set up the meeting vs GI Home Federal. Grand Island had 2 runs on 7 hits and 2 errors. Brooklawn had 5 runs on 9 hits, and 2 errors. Sam Dinkelman would get two hits and an RBI. GI got a hit from Arends, Ruiz, Verplank, Ruether, and Laureiro. Gabe Ruiz would have the other RBI in the game for Home Federal. Aldo Martinez pitched five innings, giving up nine hits and four runs. Gavin Ruether pitched the last two innings.
GI is now 13-10 on the season and will next be in action on Tuesday, June 24th at Hastings Five Points Bank. First pitch is set for 7:30 pm. Listen live on KRGI 1430/105.5 & krgi.com.
