GIFD Completes Regional HazMat Training
Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Fire Department (GIFD) recently completed specialized hazardous materials (HazMat) training in partnership with the Nebraska Civil Support Team (CST) and participating response teams from across the region.
The training focused on advanced response tactics for hazardous material incidents, including chemical identification, scene safety, decontamination procedures and coordinated response operations. The Nebraska CST, a federally supported unit trained to assist local and state agencies during chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear incidents, provided hands-on instruction and real-world scenario-based exercises.
GIFD conducts this intensive HazMat training every two years to ensure firefighters remain prepared to respond to complex and high-risk incidents. Regular training allows crews to stay current on evolving response standards, equipment and best practices while strengthening coordination with regional and state partners.
“Hazardous materials incidents require a high level of technical skill and teamwork,” said Fire Chief Cory Schmidt. “Training alongside the Civil Support Team and neighboring agencies helps ensure our firefighters are ready to respond quickly and safely while protecting our community and the environment.”
HazMat incidents can involve everything from transportation accidents and industrial spills to unknown substances in public spaces. Through this training, firefighters practiced rapid assessment, hazard mitigation and communication strategies designed to minimize risk to residents, businesses and first responders.
