GIPD Announces Return of Annual Santa Cop Program

Grand Island, Neb. — The Grand Island Police Department is proud to once again launch its annual Santa Cop program, which is an initiative that brings holiday joy to children and families in need throughout the Grand Island community.
For more than 20 years, Santa Cop has united GIPD officers, their families and community volunteers to provide gifts, food and hope during the Christmas season. The program is designed to assist families identified through officer interactions, with selections based on an officer’s desire to give back and strengthen community connections.
This year, the department expanded its outreach by introducing a Santa Cop float at the Harvest of Harmony Parade, drawing strong support from officers and their families who joined together to represent the program publicly for the first time. Through the Santa Cop program, officers and volunteers work together to collect donations, shop, wrap and deliver presents to families across Grand Island.
On delivery night, patrol cars become Santa’s sleighs, complete with flashing lights and holiday cheer, as officers and their families spread the Christmas spirit throughout the city. Every dollar donated to Santa Cop goes directly toward helping Grand Island families. While toys are always welcome, monetary donations allow the program to purchase a wider range of needed items like food, bedding, clothing, small appliances and furniture.
The program’s continued success relies on the generosity of its volunteers and community partners. Their time, enthusiasm, and support make it possible to bring joy to dozens of families each year. Santa Cop is also always looking for volunteers to help with shopping, wrapping and delivery. Those interested in getting involved or learning more are encouraged to contact the Grand Island Police Department.
