GIPS Names Garcia New Director of Nutrition Services Upon Spellman’s Retirement

GRAND ISLAND (Neb.) — Another familiar face will be leading the Grand Island Public Schools Nutrition Services team, as GIPS named a new Director of Nutrition Services.

Oscar Garcia, who has served as a GIPS Nutrition Services Supervisor since 2022, began his new role as Director of Nutrition Services in March. This follows the retirement of longtime director, Kris Spellman, who has dedicated 27 years of exceptional service to the district.

Spellman said she is looking forward to retirement and taking more time for herself and her family. As she reflected on her time with GIPS leading the Nutrition Services team, she said retiring is also bittersweet.

“I will miss all of our amazing staff and students,” Spellman shared. “I am grateful for the opportunities the school meals program and GIPS offered me to grow professionally and personally. I know our program will be in good hands with new leadership,” she said.

While celebrating Spellman's remarkable career, GIPS is also excited to highlight the transition and the promising future of the Nutrition Services department under Garcia's leadership. He has been instrumental in supporting the department's operations and expanding critical programs, including the Free Summer Meals Program.

"I look forward to serving the district as the Nutrition Services Director," said Garcia. "I plan to uphold the spirit and the integrity of the School Lunch Program, and continue to build upon all the work that Kris Spellman has put into the department over the past 27 years."

Garcia has been working closely with Spellman since May 2024 to ensure a seamless transition. This collaborative approach allowed Garcia to fully absorb Spellman's wealth of knowledge and experience, ensuring the department continues to provide nutritious and high-quality meals to over 8,000 students daily across more than 20 locations.

"Oscar has demonstrated a deep commitment to our students and a strong understanding of the complexities of our Nutrition Services department," stated Mr. Fisher, GIPS Superintendent. "His experience, combined with his dedication to building upon Kris's legacy, makes him the ideal leader to guide this vital department into the future."

Prior to joining GIPS, Garcia spent 10 years in various management positions at Hy-Vee, honing his leadership and operational skills. His proven track record of success and his passion for serving the community will be invaluable assets in his new role.

"We are confident that Mr. Garcia can step right in and continue the good work this department has been doing," added Fisher. "He has been training under Kris's guidance and will be well prepared to take on the responsibility of this critical department."

Congratulations, Mr. Garcia in your new role!
