GRAND ISLAND, NE (October 6, 2025) — Grand Island has been awarded the honor of hosting the 2028 Golden Gloves National Tournament of Champions, a premier amateur boxing event with a rich legacy dating back to 1923. The tournament will take place May 8–13, 2028, at Fonner Park and is expected to draw elite amateur boxers, coaches, families, and fans from across the United States.
The Grand Island Tourism Office will partner with Fonner Park, Grand Island Sports Council, the City of Grand Island, and a host of other businesses and organizations to welcome athletes and visitors for an unforgettable week of competition and community celebration.
A Storied Tradition in Amateur Boxing
The Golden Gloves National Tournament is the pinnacle event for amateur boxers in the United States. With nearly a century of history, it has been the launching pad for many of boxing’s legends, including Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Sugar Ray Leonard, and Oscar De La Hoya.
Each year, top amateur boxers from regional Golden Gloves franchises earn the right to compete for national titles in their weight classes. The event has become a showcase of rising talent and a celebration of the sport’s enduring spirit.
Recent host cities for the National Tournament include Detroit, Michigan (2023), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania (2024), Tulsa, Oklahoma (2025 and 2026), and Lowell, Massachusetts (2027). Grand Island’s selection as the 2028 host reflects the city’s growing reputation for successful event management and community engagement.
Behind the Bid: A Strategic Tourism Effort
Diane Rouzee, Sports Sales Manager for the CVB, played a critical role in securing the Golden Gloves bid. She traveled to Tulsa, Oklahoma, to present Grand Island’s proposal directly to the Golden Gloves National Committee during their 2025 board meeting. Her presentation and advocacy were instrumental in showcasing Grand Island’s venues, hospitality capabilities, and community support.
Community Investment Through Grow Grand Island
Securing a national event of this magnitude would not have been possible without support from the Grow Grand Island committee’s event incentive fund, which provides vital financial assistance to attract high-impact events. These funds help offset the costs associated with hosting large-scale tournaments and ensure that Grand Island remains competitive with larger cities.
“This is more than a sporting event — it’s a celebration of heritage, community, and the next generation of champions,” said Brad Mellema, Executive Director of Grand Island Tourism. “The Grow Grand Island funding played a crucial role in making our bid viable. It’s an investment that will pay dividends in visibility, tourism, and community pride.”
Opening Night Banquet: A Celebration of Champions
The tournament week will kick off with the traditional Opening Banquet on Sunday, May 7, 2028. The evening banquet sets the tone for the week ahead. It will feature keynote speakers from the world of boxing, recognition of regional champions, and the ceremonial draw for tournament brackets. It is an inspiring event that honors the athletes’ hard work and celebrates the Golden Gloves’ mission to promote sportsmanship, discipline, and opportunity through boxing.
Community & Economic Impact
Hosting the Golden Gloves Nationals is a significant win for Grand Island. It is expected to bring thousands of visitors and generate millions of dollars in economic activity through lodging, dining, and tourism. The event will also engage hundreds of volunteers and offer unique opportunities for local youth and community organizations to get involved.
Steve Pelster of Omaha, a Vice President on the Golden Gloves National Committee who has helped organize the event in Nebraska previously, said he is excited for the event to return to his home state.
