Kearney High School LOG Earns Top Cornhusker Award.

“Just Change It” was the theme of the 24-25 Kearney High School yearbook, The LOG.  This publication earned a “Cornhusker” award at the Nebraska High School Press Association (NHSPA) fall convention on Oct. 20, 2025, under the advising of Mrs. Christine Johnson.

A Cornhusker award is the highest award for high school publications like yearbooks and newspapers, chosen by independent judges for journalistic excellence. As the NHSPA website states, ‘schools earning this prestigious state honor were chosen by independent publication judges after judging all submitting publications within a specific classification system. They are the cream of the crop. They are the best of the best. Congratulations!’

For the 2024-25 school year, there were 38 yearbook submissions from classes A, B, C, and D in the state.  Of those 38 yearbooks, 18 of them were named Cornhusker finalists.  From there, 11 yearbooks were awarded the highest distinction of Cornhusker, including The LOG.

Quotes from the judges about the yearbook include:

"For me, the mark of a good theme is that I can go through the pages casually and get a sense that everything belongs to the same book without looking repetitive, and you did that visually.  You followed it up with reinforcing the verbal theme. Great job."

"I love the use of color on the headlines, and the matching secondary package boxes and the consistency of the JUST blank IT to match the theme of the book, and color blocks behind the spreads works too."

"The students should be extremely proud of their work, it is a great book.  I know your student population was certainly proud of."

This is the first time the Kearney High publication The LOG has won a Cornhusker award. In 1980, the school newspaper, The ECHO, won a Cornhusker award under the advising of Mr. Jim Sajevic.
