Merrick County Two Vehicle Crash Resulting in Fatality

(Merrick County, NE) - At approximately 10:43 p.m., on December 31st, the Merrick County Sheriff’s Office was detailed to Highway 30 near D Road in rural Merrick County, regarding a two-vehicle injury accident. A preliminary investigation revealed that a 2003 Toyota Corolla was traveling eastbound on Highway 30, crossed the center of the roadway, and collided with an eastbound 2004 Dodge Grand Caravan. The driver and sole occupant of the 2003 Toyota Corolla, identified as Javier Ortiz Diaz (52) of Central City, Merrick County, Nebraska, was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. 

The driver of the Dodge Grand Caravan , identified as Tomas Ren (50) of Grand island, Hall County, Nebraska was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, Nebraska for serious injuries sustained during the accident. Alcohol is believed to be a contributing factor in the accident. Seatbelt use is unknown. Assistance at the scene was provided by the Nebraska State Patrol, Chapman Fire and Rescue Department, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, and the Grand Island Fire Department.
