Northwest Boys Season Comes To An End


(Omaha, NE) - The Northwest boys basketball season would come to an end on Thursday night, falling to Omaha Gross Catholic, 60-57, in overtime in the Class B boys district 2 basketball tournament. 

Northwest would get off to a nice start in the game, building a 12-2 advantage and ending the first quarter with a 16-6 lead. Gross would then outscore Northwest 23-12 in the second quarter to take a one-point lead into the locker room, 29-28. 

Under the three-minute mark in the third quarter, Northwest would be down nine for a brief moment but would cut it to seven quickly and then start chipping away. The Vikings would go into the final frame down, 47-42. 

The Vikings would trail in the fourth quarter until Jaden Brandt would can a three-pointer with 56 seconds left to tie the game at 51-51. Neither team would score the rest of regulation. Gross & Northwest had several chances, even down the stretch. Gross had a deep pass with three seconds left to Will Kroll to try a deep three-pointer to win the game, but stepped out of bounds. Northwest, with then 2.1 would have an in bounds to Blake Wissing, but his three-pointer at the top of the key would just miss. 

Both teams would go back and forth in the overtime period. Gross would prevail, 9-6. A Dawson Urbanski three-pointer from the 10-foot volleyball line to try and tie the game and force another overtime just fell short in the closing seconds of the extra period. 

Gross Catholic was led in scoring by Tyson Heilig, who had 19 points for the Cougars. Ah'Treil Simpson chipped in 13 points. 

Northwest was led by Dawson Urbanski with 18 points, Blake Wissing had 16, and Jackob Wald had 12 points. Northwest season ends with a record of 13-9. 

Gross at 15-10 advances to to the B-2 district final on Monday to face Norris.
