Northwest Hoops Splits At Gretna

(Gretna, NE) - The Northwest basketball teams split their varsity contest on Tuesday night at Gretna. The Gretna girls defeated the Vikings, 48-33. The Northwest boys defeated the Dragons, 72-59. 

The Viking girls lead 19-17 at halftime. In the 3rd quarter, the Dragons tightened up their defense and started forcing turnovers, leading to points in a 17-3 run. The Vikings did not hit a field goal in the quarter as Laiken Dorsey had all three points from the free throw line. Gretna would outscore Northwest in the fourth quarter, 14-11. Maggie Miller led Gretna with 18 points. Northwest would be led in scoring by Jolie O'Hara with 10 points, and Emerson McIntyre chipped in 9 points. Gretna, with the win, is now 13-8, and Northwest slips to 12-10. 

The Northwest boys would get off to a great start in the game vs the Dragons with a 22-16 first quarter. As the Vikings would build close to a double-digit lead, Gretna would get a scoring run together, but Northwest would answer all night. The Vikings would go up ten at the break, 37-27. A 20-19 3rd quarter by the Dragons would get the deficit to nine going into the 4th quarter. The Vikings would hit the gas again in the final quarter, outscoring Gretna, 16-12. The Dragons were led by their leading scorer Brandtley Hack, with 23 points. Northwest would get 20 points from junior Jackob Wald and 17 from Jaden Brandt. Gretna is now 12-10. Northwest moves to 13-8. 

Both Viking squads will wrap up the regular season hosting Elkhorn North on Thursday, Feb. 19th.
