Northwest Soccer Clubs Gear Up For Start Of Season

(Grand Island, NE) - Depending on what is delivered in the coming days from Mother Nature, the start of the high school spring soccer season is coming up quickly. The Northwest clubs are set to open up things up with Norris on Thursday, March 20th. The girls will be on the road, meanwhile, the boys will have a home match with the Titans at Viking Field.
The girls are coming off a state tournament appearance falling to Bennington in the first round by a final score of 2-0. The Vikings three regular-season losses came to Norris, Elkhorn, and Columbus Scotus. Going into the state tournament Northwest had an 8-match winning streak. After coming up short of a state tournament the year before losing to Omaha Gross at home in 2023 the Vikings bounced back in 2024 with a 14-4 record getting back to the state for the second time in school history as the Vikings continue to chase the elusive first win at the girls state soccer tournament. Northwest will have plenty of returning experience with 12 seniors on this year's squad for Head Coach Jess Herrmann.
The Northwest boys will try to improve on an 8-9 record ago. The Vikings were a young squad a season ago and will look to some talented freshmen even this season to help once the black and gold hit the pitch. The Vikings made a district final a season ago being one win away from the state tournament but would fall to Bennington by a final score of 5-0. Northwest had a roller coaster of a season as the Vikings went 3-2 in shootout contests and 1-1 in straight overtime matches. The Vikings will be led again this season by Head Coach AJ Armstrong in his second season as the head man.
After Thursday's scheduled matchup with Norris, the Vikings will head to Kearney Catholic on March 25th to take on the Stars.
