NSP Investigating Michell PD, Scotts Bluff County Officer-Involved Shooting

January 17, 2026 (Scottsbluff, Neb.)  — The Nebraska State Patrol Special Investigations Team is investigating an officer-involved shooting that involved the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office and the Mitchell Police Department. The incident happened Friday evening.

Friday evening at approximately 8:00 p.m. MT, NSP was notified that the Mitchell Police Department and Scotts Bluff County Sheriff’s Office had been involved in a shooting at the conclusion of a pursuit. The incident occurred near South 5 Road and South E Road in rural Sioux County. At the conclusion of the pursuit, both a Scotts Bluff County deputy and a Mitchell police officer fired their weapons. The driver of the vehicle was struck.

The driver was transported to Regional West Hospital in Scottsbluff in critical condition and has since been flown to a hospital in Denver for additional treatment. The Sioux County Attorney has requested that the Nebraska State Patrol investigate the incident. That investigation is in the early stages and remains ongoing.

There were no law enforcement officers injured in this incident.
