Shared Public Works, Police Facility on Track for Spring 2026 Opening

Kevin Denney Interview

Grand Island, Neb. — The new shared facility that will serve both the Grand Island Public Works Department and the Grand Island Police Department remain on schedule for a spring 2026 opening.

The facility, located at 3836 West US Highway 30, will consolidate key operations for the Public Works Wastewater Division while also providing much-needed space for the Police Department. The shared approach allows both departments to improve efficiency, expand capacity and better serve the community from a centrally located site with direct access to major roadways.

For Public Works, the project brings together the Wastewater Collections Group and equipment that are currently spread across multiple locations. The new site will allow for improved protection of sensitive equipment and space capable of accommodating larger vehicles and tools used in maintaining the city’s wastewater infrastructure.

The 25,000-square-foot facility is being renovated to include site improvements, upgraded access points, exterior building updates and interior enhancements designed to support daily operations. Improvements include new driveway access, landscaping, security fencing and gates, additional overhead doors, equipment support infrastructure and interior workspace updates.

The Police Department will utilize a portion of the building for locker rooms, training space, secure storage areas including weapons and ammunition vaults and office space for personnel and equipment. Partnering on the facility allows the department to meet operational needs without constructing a separate garage, office and training facility at the Law Enforcement Center site.

The shared model reduces overall costs while providing long-term operational benefits for both departments. City officials say the project reflects a continued focus on strategic investment in infrastructure.

Construction and renovations continue to progress, and the facility remains on track to open in spring 2026. Once completed, the site will support more coordinated field operations, improved response capabilities and more efficient use of city resources for years to come.
