Timmerman Quiets Wolverines in Series Opener
Tucker Timmerman allowed just one run across seven innings in Nebraska’s 3-2 win vs. Michigan on Friday night at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park.
Nebraska (25-25, 12-13 Big Ten) scored three runs on seven hits, while Michigan (31-18, 14-11 Big Ten) totaled two runs, seven hits and an error.
Case Sanderson led the Huskers at the plate, going 3-for-4 on Friday night. Riley Silva had a 1-for-2 night with an RBI double, while Robby Bolin, Cayden Brumbaugh and Joshua Overbeek tallied one hit each.
Timmerman improved to 2-1 on the season after dealing a career-high seven frames. The sophomore surrendered one run on five hits with five strikeouts and a walk. Drew Christo recorded an out while allowing a run on a pair of hits.
Luke Broderick became the 12th Husker reliever in program history to reach 10 saves in a season after pitching 1.2 shutout innings with a pair of punchouts.
Michigan scored the first run of the night in the top of the first to grab an early one-run lead. A leadoff walk, followed by a stolen base and groundout to first had a runner on third for the Wolverines with one out. An RBI single off Timmerman’s glove had Michigan out front 1-0 through the first inning.
The Huskers plated two runs behind three hits in the bottom of the second to grab a 2-1 advantage. Overbeek and Sanderson opened the inning with back-to-back singles, before Silva laced an RBI double down the right-field line to bring home Overbeek.
A two-out wild pitch scored Sanderson from third to give the Big Red its 2-1 lead after two innings.
Timmerman allowed just two hits over the next four innings to send a one-run lead into the bottom of the sixth inning for the Husker offense.
Nebraska loaded the bases with no outs in the sixth after a four-pitch walk to Overbeek, a single from Sanderson and a fielder’s choice by Silva. Hogan Helligso plated Overbeek from third on an RBI groundout to the shortstop to extend NU’s lead to 3-1 through six innings.
Timmerman worked around a leadoff single in the top of the seventh before handing the ball off to Christo to begin the eighth inning.
Michigan had the bases loaded with one out after a walk and a pair of singles in the eighth. A walk on a 3-1 count brought the Wolverines within a run, before Broderick induced a 5-3 double play to get out of the jam.
Broderick retired the Wolverines in order in the top of the ninth with a groundout and two punchouts to preserve Nebraska’s 3-2 win on Friday night.
Nebraska and Michigan continue the series Saturday, May 10th at Hawks Field at Haymarket Park. First pitch between the Huskers and Wolverines is set for 2:02 p.m. on B1G+.
