Two GI Paving Improvement Projects to Start on March 17

Grand Island, Neb. — The City of Grand Island Public Works Department will begin two significant roadway projects on Monday, March 17, 2025.

The South Locust Street Paving Improvement Project (Fonner Park Road to Koenig Street) will begin on the east side of the South Locust Street. The intersection of Fonner Park Road and South Locust Street will be closed, Monday, March 17.

South Locust Street north-south traffic will be maintained on the existing southbound (west) lanes, one lane for each direction. Fonner Park Road east-west traffic will be closed at the east side of the intersection. Fonner Park Road east-west traffic on the west side of the intersection will still have connection to South Locust Street. The closure of the east side of the South Locust Street and Fonner Park Road intersection is tentatively planned into May 2025.

The South Locust Street project will replace the existing asphalt street with a concrete curb and gutter roadway section along with sidewalks/bike trail, storm sewer, water main, sanitary sewer repairs, roadway lighting and associated pavement markings and signage. A roundabout will also be constructed at the intersection of South Locust Street and Anna Street/Bismark Road.

The South Locust Street project is scheduled for two construction seasons in 2025 & 2026. South Locust Street reconstruction from Fonner Park Drive to Delaware Avenue is scheduled for 2025. South Locust Street reconstruction from Delaware Avenue to Koenig is scheduled for 2026. On February 11, 2025, the Grand Island City Council awarded the South Locust Street construction contract to Elsbury Construction, LLC of Grand Island for $9,044,222.01.

The second roadway improvement is a Diers Avenue and Concord Avenue Intersection Improvement Project, which will begin on Monday, March 17. Access to businesses will be maintained north, south and west of the intersection closure. Detour routes will be provided on Faidley Avenue, Claude Road, 13th Street and U.S. Highway 281.

The Diers Avenue and Concord Avenue intersection improvements are a sub-phase of the Claude Road improvements from Faidley Avenue to State Street. The Diers Avenue and Concord Avenue intersection improvements will promote Diers Avenue as the through north-south traffic movement through the intersection. Concord Avenue will be under stop control on the west leg of the intersection.

The Diers Avenue and Concord Avenue intersection improvements are under the contract for the Claude Road Improvement Project from 13th Street to State Street. On December 5, 2023, the city council awarded the contract to Diamond Engineering Company of Grand Island for $4,338,004.15.
