Update On Hornady Explosion

At 9:47 CST, Friday, October 13, 2023, Cairo Fire Department responded to the report of an explosion at Hornady Manufacturing Company, 8318 W Old Potash Hwy, rural Grand Island.

Upon arrival, firefighters determined an explosion had occurred within the PVE West Building. Nebraska State Fire Marshal
Investigators were requested to aid in the incident investigation.

Employee Adriana Alvarez, 32, of Grand Island was pronounced deceased at the scene, as a result of the explosion. Two additional employees were injured in the explosion, one self-transported, one taken by ambulance. Both injured employees were treated and released the same day.

Following an investigation, the cause of the explosion was found to be accidental. The explosion occurred during the mixing process of the primer compound.

Responding agencies included Cairo Fire Department, Alda Fire Department, Wood River Fire Department, Grand Island Rural Fire Department, Grand Island Fire Department, Hall County Attorney’s Office, Hall County Sheriff’s Office, and the Nebraska State Fire Marshal Agency.

The State Fire Marshal Agency has completed their investigation.
