GI Mail-In Election Ballots Will Go Out Monday

Grand Island, Neb. — For the first time under Nebraska’s new Voter ID laws, the City of Grand Island will be holding a special mail-in election, and it comes with a few subtle changes.

On Monday, July 22, ballots will be mailed out to all registered voters in Grand Island. They will be able to vote for or against authorizing the city to establish a Good Life Economic Development Program to help capture tax revenue that previously went to the state.

Per the new state law, voters will be required to provide a form of identification on their mail-in ballot. The most common method will be by simply writing their Nebraska driver’s license number or state identification card number on the back of the envelope. Voters can also provide a photocopy of their valid photo ID.

A voter can also check a box claiming they have a reasonable impediment preventing them from presenting a proper identification, which would then come with a certification to be enclosed.

Ballots will need to be returned to the Hall County Election Commissioner’s Office by Tuesday, August 13 at 5 p.m., and Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet is encouraging voters to be proactive about getting their ballots in on time while also taking into account the mailing process.

“There may not be time to return the ballot by mail,” Overstreet said. “We are recommending that people not put their ballot back in by mail after August 3. They can utilize our dropbox.”
