Good Life District Special Election Results Certified

Grand Island, Neb. — Grand Island is officially adding more good to the “Good Life.”

Hall County Election Commissioner Tracy Overstreet released the official results that were finalized by the Hall County Canvassing Board.

On Tuesday, August 13, unofficial results showed 5,044 residents voted for the creation of a Good Life District Economic Development Program, while 2,415 voted against. During the finalization process, an additional eight votes were counted. Five of the new votes were in favor of the program, and three were against.

The next step for the city will be to bring a series of ordinances to the City Council in future meetings. One would be to formally approve the economic development program, while others will be tax ordinances catered toward Grand Island re-capturing the 2.75% of sales tax that is currently going to the state.

Once those are passed, the city will begin the process of considering future developments within the district boundaries. City Administrator Laura McAloon also says it’s of the utmost importance for her and the city that the general public is involved every step of the way.

“Development decisions always go through the Regional Planning Commission,” McAloon said. “There would be at least two opportunities for public input. There will be many opportunities over the next 3-6 months.”
