Grand Island, Neb. — Less than two months after assisting in the power restoration efforts following severe storms in both Omaha and Lincoln, the Grand Island Utilities Department is again deploying a team to provide outside assistance.

GIUD is sending six linemen to Albany, Georgia to help communities restore power in the wake of Hurricane Helene, which has been upgraded to a Category 1 hurricane with winds reaching 80 miles per hour.

The hurricane is currently moving north through the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to make landfall in the U.S. as a Category 3 hurricane Thursday evening. GIUD’s team is currently en route to a staging site alongside a team from Lincoln Electric Systems and will be deployed as needed after the storm passes.

“Whenever disaster hits, we want to do everything we can do to help out," Grand Island Utilities Director Ryan Schmitz said. "We know that if the roles were reversed, these crews would return the favor."
