Personal Injury Crash Buffalo County UPDATE

The crash on Highway 40 this morning involved a westbound 2017 Chevy Trax driven by a 34 year old Kearney woman, and an eastbound 2020 Jeep Cherokee driven by a 51 year old Mason City woman.  Both were transported from the scene to CHI – GSH in Kearney.  A portion of the roadway on Highway 40 was closed form approximately 4 hours for the investigation.   

Initial Report
The Buffalo County Sheriff's Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding a two vehicle head-on crash just west of Amherst, NE on Highway 40.  The crash occurred at approximately 7:24 AM on Friday August 16, 2024.  At the time of this news media press release, public safety first responders remain the scene.  A portion of Highway 40 at this location remains closed at this time. 

According to preliminary investigation, two vehicles traveling in opposite directions collided on Highway 40.  Both drivers were transported from the scene to CHI – GSH hospital in Kearney, NE.  No passengers were in either vehicle.  At the time of this media release, the identity of the drivers has not been confirmed, and authorities are actively investigating at the crash scene.  A portion of Highway 40 remains closed.   

Deputies were assisted at the scene by members of the Kearney Police Department, Kearney / Buffalo County Fatality Accident Investigation (FAIT) team, Amherst  Volunteer Fire Department, CHI GSH Paramedics, Nebraska State Department of Roads and Buffalo County Attorney’s Office.

Investigation is ongoing at this time.
